KFTC 2020 Primary Analysis

August 7, 2020 – September 1, 2020

How might we...

  • Base Building: How might we improve our engagement with our members/base to build power?
  • How might KFTC help create authentic democracy in KY with high levels of deep personal engagement/participation from excluded or marginalized communities pushing active agenda of progressive change?
  • How might we build a 100000 person electoral base that supports a pro-democracy agenda?
  • How might we build a movement that matches our values?
  • How might we build develop sustain and continue growing an integrated mass bass of 1000 Democracy Leaders and 100000 New Power Voters in three years?
  • How might we leverage the opportunity created by having a Black progressive candidate running for Senate to get much higher volunteer activation?
  • How might we understand where and who are the people who took initial and increased actions and responsibility with KFTC during the Booker primary?

Hypothesis

Having an exciting Black progressive candidate led to greater activation of a group of multiracial ‘Democracy Leaders’ for KFTC in the months of May, June, July 2020.

People in the New Power Voters Group will take similar action in the Fall election as they did in the Booker primary election, therefore allowing them to more effectively target their voter contact efforts (skip persuasion, go to activation)

Design

Steps:

  • Get access to data, export EveryAction/VAN
  • Consider what other data want to add onto and get Harold access to that
  • Match data across platforms.
  • Get clear on what makes each person distinct (criteria for Democracy Leaders and New Power Voters Group)
    • Find out if there is some tagging already or if Harold will do manual analysis
  • Output: periscope dashboard that includes list of people in Democracy Leaders and Rising Group. Charts and Graphs on people’s growth. Actions that were more popular or not popular.

For the Future:

Because this is retroactive analysis it can’t be tested without a new experiment based on the learnings found here.

Testing could include mobilizing around other black progressive candidates in the fall general election or in an off year election. It could include testing rates of turnout or reconfiguring the standards and considering what would aid in mobilization for a general election v a primary and (looking at for example turnout/vol numbers in last presidential general).

Metrics

  • Getting all the pieces of data we need into one single data warehouse. (so can create 360 degree views on people!)
  • Creating dashboards in ‘Periscope’  that are easy to understand for non data savvy people.
  • KFTC can know who their people are and can skip persuasion and move straight into asks and get running more quickly.
  • Insights for KFTC about how effective their primary election volunteer engagement was, and learnings they can implement for the fall.
  • Insights for KFTC into their New Power Voters they identified during the primary — how many, geographic spread, demographics, how they were contacted. And learnings they can implement for the fall election.
  • In body will feel positive because it means there is less paid mail, canvassers, fb ads…. So KFTC can move more quickly to the end they want with less friction and if it goes well then leaves people to do what they do best.
  • Being better able to explain to campaigning to people. Anything that can make the reporting easier and more turnkey (sample code, automating processes etc).
  • Will feel 10lbs lighter.

Learnings

Experiments need to start as experiments. A data project like this that looks at work and doesn’t have a learning stance and inquiry behind it, therefore failed as an experiment.
